Christmas can be the most wonderful time of the year – but it doesn’t always come stress-free.

As thoughts turn to celebration and relaxation, see our list of common risks to help you on your way to a Happier Christmas.

Prepare for winter weather

Freezing temperatures can cause water pipes to burst, leading to significant water damage in your home. To help to prevent this:

  • Keep pipes insulated - especially if they are external.
  • Keep your heating on low - leaving your heating on low at around 15OC, particularly while you’re away, helps maintain a consistent temperature and keeps your pipes toasty.

If a pipe bursts, immediately turn the water off at the mains. If you’re a Methodist home insurance customer, you have home emergency cover, so keep the number handy just in case.

Be wary of festive scams

Cyber criminals may take advantage of increased online shopping and Christmas spending. Be extra cautious and keep an eye out for these common scams:

  • Phishing emails - inboxes will likely be filled with promotional emails and delivery notifications. Be wary of emails from unknown senders, especially if they contain spelling mistakes or odd phrasing. Don’t click the links in emails that seem unusual, go straight to the company’s website using your browser.
  • Fake delivery texts – scammers may send texts posing as delivery companies and claiming there are additional fees to be paid. These messages can be convincing, especially if you are waiting for parcels, but (again!) avoid clicking any links. Verify delivery details by using the tracking feature on the company’s official website or app.

Minimise burglary risks

Homes are often left unoccupied as families travel to be together at Christmas. Consider these tips to protect your property:

  • Smart bulbs and light timers - create the illusion that someone is home by scheduling lights to come on at certain times.
  • Hide presents - avoid leaving gifts where they’re visible through windows. Always hide gifts in the house rather than in less secure outbuildings or your car.
  • Manage deliveries - unattended parcels on doorsteps can signal that nobody’s home. If you won’t be in, ask a trusted neighbour to accept delivery for you.
  • Social media - be cautious about posting holiday travel plans online, this can unintentionally advertise an empty home to potential burglars.

Methodist home insurance customers get a 20% uplift in their sums insured to cover additional contents during times of celebration.

Minimise fire hazards

Christmas lights and festive decorations add warmth and cheer to our homes, but can also increase fire risk. Take these precautions to reduce the chance of a house fire:

  • Avoid overloading electrical sockets – it can lead to overheating, a common cause of electrical fires.
  • Take care with candles – avoid placing candles too close to anything that may catch fire. Make sure the decorations themselves are secure and won’t fall into flames.

Peace of mind for a stress-free season

By taking these precautions and ensuring your insurance policies cover these risks, you are doing all you can to protect yourself and your home against common Christmas mishaps, leaving you free to focus on the festive spirit and enjoy a season free from unexpected worries.
